Growing up in the suburbs, Ebony Oshunrinde is just a regular girl from Brampton. No one would expect her to be working with one of the most prolific artists of our generation, but that’s exactly what the 18-year-old is doing.
Known popularly as WondaGurl, you can listen to her work on Drake’s most recent mixtape, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. She collaborated with him on the songs, Used To and Company.
Ever since she started watching and listening to widely-respected producer, Timbaland, on YouTube, Oshunrinde was inspired to become a music producer herself.
WondaGurl, a Brampton Producer got her start at 14 when she participated in Battle of the Beatmakers, a music competition in Toronto. Her performance caught the ear of Toronto producer Boi-1Da (whose name she used to come up with her own), one of the best in the industry and a friend of Drake’s. Her claim to fame arrived soon after, when she collaborated with an up-and-coming rapper, Travis Scott, who played Jay-Z one of Oshunrinde’s beats. He liked it so much, he used it in the song, Crown, on his album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Oshunrinde is not only on the rise in Canada, but in the United States as well. She’s already produced for some of the most popular artists today, including A$AP Rocky, Ryan Leslie, and Lil’ Wayne. But for now, Oshunrinde is focusing on finishing high school at Chinguacousy Secondary School as she continues to build on her impressive resume and grow as a producer.
