During this year’s Grammy week festivities in Hollywood California, eight of the most exciting hip hop producers from Toronto (and surrounding areas) faced off against eight of Cali’s best young producers in the International Beat Battle: Battle of the Americas, Toronto vs. L.A.
Battle of the America’s is a regional beat battle series, where producers team up and battle producers from other cities across the U.S. and Canada. Presented by the Toronto based non-profit, Beat Academy, with support from big music industry influences, the series has grown to become a premier showcase platform for up and coming producers.
#TeamTO consisted of various GTA musicians who have produced tracks for local artists and international stars alike.
Some notable Brampton connections on #TeamTO include Wondagurl, the Brampton based teenager who was catapulted into the public eye for her work on Jay Z’s most recent album, and Prezident Jeff, a Juno nominated producer and North Park Secondary School alumni.
#TeamTO was triumphant in a hard fought six round battle against #TeamLA on their own home turf. The battle was close to the very end, and was decided by a sudden death showdown in which the celebrity judges, including DJ BattleCat (Snoop Dogg’s concert DJ) and Jahlil Beats, producer of Bobby Shmurda’s breakout smash hit ‘Hot Boy’, proclaimed #TeamTO victorious.
In addition to winning, the members of #TeamTO were able to network and increase the exposure of their work, the work of our entire region, and even the entire country. Congratulations to #TeamTO, and the local producers that contributed to the excellent representation of our region.
